For several years I have written extensively about the extra nutritional requirements needed by the athletic animal if peak performance is expected. Of course, the same applies to the human athlete. I also mentioned that despite best intentions, diets may not be all they are cracked up to be. More recently, both the human and veterinary literature have contained powerful, supportive information emphasising that nutritional extras above the norm are vital for optimum performance.
On the 4th of September this year, Dr. Ian Brighthope, a respected medical practitioner and agricultural scientist who is also the President of the complementary Health Council of Australia presented an address at The National Press Club, titled Challenging The Health Paradigm. His well-presented address outlined the benefits and health advantages of various supplements, which enhance a healthy body and lifestyle, while preventing and reducing your chances of dying from a wide variety of conditions. In his talk, Dr. Brighthope mentioned many substances that can be beneficial including minerals, trace minerals, vitamins and herbs. While this specific address did not allude to requirements for optimum physical performance, it can be clearly reasoned if
Dr. Brighthope's suggestions are taken to heart, the overall health and physical performance of the human athlete will be superior to that of an unsupplemented athlete doing a similar activity.
