Hello fellow licencees and Members, my name is Stephanie, I am a past Chair of the Greyhound Racing Industry, and it is my privilege as the President of QGOBTA to invite you, if not a member at present, to become one and join with us in our aim to promote and improve the status of Greyhound Racing in Queensland.
Greyhound Racing has been at the cross roads for many years, and it Administrators are having difficulty in determining which lever to pull, to make a sustainable future for the sport in the near future. The fact that Greyhound Racing is now a Commercial entity is a reality, signalling the end of Government handouts, the Administrators must rise to the occasion and accept responsibility to move the Industry forward in a sustainable format.
The advent of full privatisation, e.g. a Corporative entity has brought with it the question, is the Industry sustainable in its present format? For those who can remember back in time, the Industry to-day is but a shell of what it was. The closure of many race tracks brought about by starvation of funding from the parent body and/or inactivity at club level to be proactive, has culminated in the demise we find ourselves in to-day.
The need for our Administrators to be on the front foot and proactive in marketing the sport has reached a crucial point in the sports life cycle. We are currently being run over by other competitive sports in the quest for the almighty dollar, my question to you as Licencees and members of this Association, “are we up to the challenge?” or is it all to hard.
How do we recover from this situation? If we are going to move forward this question needs to be addressed immediately. The forced closure of the Parklands Complex nearly two ago and no replacement of that racing venue on the immediate horizon is taking its toll on owners and trainers.
Extra costs associated with racing is also biting, many owners are telling me they would like to breed, but with increased workload pups create, and limited opportunity to sell their pups, and low returns from sales they cannot commit.
What does this mean to the Industry? If the breeding industry is in free fall, how does the Industry continue? Is this partly from the fall out of track closures? Or is it the level of prize money has not kept pace with the ever increasing costs to race a greyhound?
I can pose these questions, but I am only one person, for this Association to grow strong, you need to voice your constructive thoughts, as well as assist with our operations, in order to grow our sport.
Each month I will research and address a different subject, if you have a subject you would like me to address, please let me know and I will try to assist.
I will introduce the Committee of the Association for 2009/2010
